Today is a day of celebration in South Africa; celebrating the life, trials, hardships and unwavering spirit of freedom embodied in the man that was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Nelson Mandela and Tom PJ Hennessy, PRCSI 1994-1996. in Capetown at the conferring of the RCSI Honorary Fellowship on Mandela  On 27th March 1996 RCSI awarded Nelson Mandela it's highest honour, the Honorary Fellowship.  There is no point in trying to paraphrase the citation given by the RCSI Vice-President, Mr. Peter McClean, as it would be an injustice to the person, achievements and spirit of Mandela. Just like the temperature, get ready for the excitement levels to soar! The years 1920 to 1950 of the RCSI Roll of Licentiates are now available on line. Click on this link to find them RCSI Roll of Licentiates RCSI Roll of Licentiates (RCSI/LIC/02) The signature that can be seen above is that of Harry O'Flanagan who received his licence from the College in 1939. Harry was to have a colourful medical career joining the RAF medical branch in 1944 and inspecting medical facilities in Palestine, Libya and Kenya.  Harry O'Flanagan c.1944 In 1962 Harry was appointed Registrar of RCSI and under his creative thinking, energy and enthusiasm the College was revitalised, upgraded and expanded. To show the College's appreciation for all Harry had done, he was bestowed with an Honorary Fellowship in 1981. The RCSI Heritage Collections are delighted to announce the arrival of its latest collection that of the Charitable Infirmary (Jervis Street Hospital) received from the Charitable infirmary Charitable Trust (CICT). The full and colourful history of the CICT can be found on their website http://www.cict.ie/history/  Mr. Peter McLean (1934-2010)  The Charitable Infirmary Collection made its way to the   Royal College of Surgeons through the foresight of one of   our past Presidents and member of the CICT Trust   Committee Mr. Peter McLean.   Mr. McLean studied at the RCSI, became a Fellow of the   College in 1962, a Council Member in 1984 and President   from 1996 to 1998. He interned in the Charitable Infirmary   in Jervis Street, worked as a consultant in there and in  Beaumont Hospital and sat on the CICT Trust Committee.  He had a passion f...
